            Overview

An introduction to the comparative analysis of foreign policy for the professional degree students in the MA in International Relations Program. A survey and critique of approaches to understanding foreign policy decision-making from the perspective of the practitioner who must deal with problems of individual choice, small groups, bureaucratic politics, and organizational constraints in the conduct of foreign policy. Case studies and simulations are used to provide first-hand experience in policy decision-making in the United States and other countries.

The course begins with an overview and critique of competing world views, such as realism and neo-realism, pluralism, globalism, feminism, and post-modern perspectives. After exploring these world views, we focus on the challenges of decision-making. In addition, students have the opportunity to participate in policy research projects and report their findings to "clients" in other countries.

In the spring 2008 semester, PSC 783 is a signature course for the Maxwell MA-IR Program.

Offered in spring on Tuesdays in 070 Eggers from 6:30 to 9:15 pm by Matt Bonham.
