The Distinction Program in Economics is directed by Professor Chris Rohlfs. Dr. Rohlfs received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 2006. Rohlfs specializes in applied microeconomics and applied econometrics. His work applies cost-benefit analysis to public policies, with particular focus on demand estimation and applying the economic concept of the Value of a Statistical Life (VSL) to the evaluation of policies designed to reduce fatality risk. His most recent work examines the cost of substituting armored vehicles (capital) for troops (labor) in combat situations as a costly way to reduce military fatalities. Dr. Rohlfs is delighted to be taking over for Professor Mary Lovely as the Economics Distinction Program Director, and he looks forward to working with the talented students invited to join the program.
