The Distinction Program is open to students majoring in Economics, alone or as a double or dual major. The Program is selective and students must meet the academic criteria described below. When are students chosen for the Program?
Students are considered for invitation into the Program of Distinction in Economics on the basis of three selection criteria. First, the student must have achieved a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.3 by January of the junior year. Second, the student must have declared Economics as a major and have at least a 3.0 grade point average within the major. Third, the student must have successfully completed coursework indicative of success in the program. A student may show promise through completion of research-preparatory courses such as ECN 505: Mathematical Economics, ECN 521: Economics Statistics, or ECN 522: Econometric Methods. Alternatively, a student may indicate readiness for independent research through outstanding performance in 400-level field courses, such as Public Economics, Urban Economics, Labor Economics, or International Economics.
Students are chosen for Distinction in Economics during spring semester of their junior year. Students studying abroad during the junior year are also considered for the program. Letters inviting students to participate in the program are sent to eligible students in March, prior to registration for fall classes. Invited students may meet with the Distinction Program Director before registration to decide if the program is right for them.
