International Public and NGO Management

9. International economic and social management (development, trade, finance, drug abuse and pandemics)

October 29 and 30, 2009

Development assistance was a hallmark of international activity for over sixty years. Initially seen as a supportive activity to supplement national efforts through provision of technical assistance and foreign exchange for public investment, it has undergone a transformation that is leading it increasingly to provide a kind of global public investment and management function, linked to international norms,a global trading and financial system as well as law enforcement and public health. The management of this function implies new approaches and skills and is making new demands on both international public and non-governmental organizations.

Questions covered

  • Recipient vs. donor sovereignty (governance in international development assistance);
  • The role of innovation and NGO's in this;
  • How impact of development projects can be measured;
  • Trends leading toward a globalization of public investment;
  • Growing role of international organizations in dealing with health and social problems.
