Issue 1
Module 1 due September 18!
“How You Can Help…Yourself”
General Suggestions
- Instructions on formatting the module
are available on the PAF 101 website by clicking on the Modules link.
- Make sure to cite everything unless
you are specifically told not to. IF IN DOUBT, JUST CITE IT!
- DO NOT include the TPE in your final
Module 1 paper.
- Answers should not be in bold. Points
will not be taken off, but it is much easier for the TAs to understand and
grade.
- Articles must be from a newspaper
source, either the print or online edition.
- TV news channel websites are not
newspapers! Ex. CNN.com.
- If your quote from a newspaper article
comes from an actual newspaper, cite it using the page you found it on
(A-1, B-2, etc.). If you found it online, the page number for your quote
citation is the page number on the article printout (1, 2, 3 etc.).
- Newspaper articles must have been
published within the last 6 months.
- The
Daily Orange does NOT count as a newspaper.
- Use at least 1 article for the entire
module, but no more than 7.
- Attach only the first page of the
article (unless otherwise stated) directly behind the exercise for which
it was first used.
- DO NOT FORGET to label articles with
the exercise number and the section letter that they correspond to at the
top of the page.
- Do not use acronyms or abbreviations.
Always include the name or title of the position or institution spelled
out completely.
- Modules are due at the beginning of
class. Any module turned in after 12:50 is considered late! You will lose
five points.
- If you have questions, ask your TA
before or after class, contact your TA by email, or attend any TA’s office
hours.
- Always refer to the Maxwell Manual before asking your
TA.
- DO NOT STRESS. If you start early and
do not procrastinate, you should finish your module with lots of time to
check it over!
- Once you think you’re done with the
module, walk away from it and come back to look it over one more time.
- DO NOT include the KHS assignment in
Module 1.
Exercise 1.1
- Make
sure you include the entire quote.
- Use
citations!
- Your
paragraph should be no more than 200 words.
- For
1.1B, make sure your quote is a full sentence from the article.
Exercise 1.2
- Use
the Maxwell Manual to help you
identify what legislative, administrative, and judicial actions are.
- Follow
the directions on where to place the articles that you need to use.
- For
1.2B and 1.2C, make sure that your articles relate to your societal
category.
Exercise 1.3
- For 1.3B and 1.3C, your justification should be only 1
sentence.
- Do not just quote from the article.
- In 1.3B and 1.3C, make sure that the players have a role in
influencing a government policy at some level.
- For 1.3C, make sure you are using the same policy as in 1.3B.
Exercise 1.4
- For
1.4B, make sure that your nonprofit organization is not a public interest
group.
- For
1.4D, make sure that the government official you choose has already been
elected.
- Pick
a realistic official because you may have to contact them at a later date.
- Make
sure the official in part D is elected and not appointed.
Exercise 1.5
- Most students lose points on the Reference Page, so be sure to
follow the APA Guidelines to help with correct formatting and citations.
The APA Guidelines can be accessed from the PAF 101 website by clicking on
Modules and then clicking on APA Guide.
If you are still unsure of proper format, ask the APA Director, Vicky
Mei (TA).
- Always check your results if you use online citation generators
because they are usually wrong. You’re
better off just writing them yourself!
- Don’t forget to write the word ‘References’ before listing your
sources.
- Always double space the Reference Page.
- Make sure all references are listed in alphabetical order.
- Remember to have a hanging indent should your references exceed
one line.
- There should be no hyperlinks for websites.
- The Associated Press is not an author.

newsletter should be e-mailed to Jessie Kitzman, the
