PAF 101 Community Service Opportunities

Director:
Rachel Bubier rmbubier@syr.edu

As a requirement for PAF 101, you must complete 5 hours of worthwhile off-campus community service.  The service must be performed after the first day of class and must be done off campus in the Syracuse area, and may not be a fundraising event.  The deadline for completing the service and handing in the assignment on the next page is Monday, November 3rd at 12:50 pm (Click here for the form).  Late submissions will be treated the same way as the late paper policy for the course.

If you fail to complete the required five hours, you will lose 35 points from your Module 4 grade.

  • Click here for a list of approved community service opportunities in which you can take part.

  • If you volunteer at a site not listed, please fill out a Community Service Approval FormPlease contact the site director 48 hours in advance to doing your service.

  • Your best bet is to sign up for PAF 110: Public Service Practicum.  You do 35 hours community service, attend four classes and receive one credit.  It automatically takes care of your community service requirement for PAF 101, you get 10 extra credit points for community service, and helps you get admitted to the major.

    * Note: If a student has previously taken and completed PAF110 before taking this course the student will still have to complete the 5 hour community service  requirement for PAF 101 this semester. However the student may receive 5 extra credit points if he/she writes a paragraph on what community service project they worked on. Also the student may only receive up to 10 more extra credit points for completing any extra community service after the 5 hour requirement.

  • Community service required in other classes or student organizations (e.g. WRT 105, APO) may fulfill the 5 hour requirement, but please fill out the Community Service Approval Form to be sure. However, you may not use community service hours required in other classes or organizations for extra credit points. To receive extra credit points, you must go outside that class or organization and volunteer elsewhere.

  • As soon as you have completed your service, complete the Community Service Form, and write a page on the experience. The page should relate one principle from Chapter 1-3 and one principle from Chapter 4 of Professor Coplin's book, How You Can Help, to your community experience. IF YOU DO NOT WRITE A SATISFACTORY PARAGRAPH, YOU WILL LOSE UP TO 10 POINTS FROM YOUR MODULE 4 GRADE.
  • If you complete more than 5 hours, you can earn up to 10 points extra credit points at the rate of 1 credit for every 2 extra hours of community service. To get the extra credit, fill out the Community Service Extra Credit Form and give it to your TA who will inform the Community Service Director. This is due by Monday December 1st, at 12:50 PM.
